It was one of
those days when my parents and I used to sit together and go through hundreds of
profiles and photographs of guys in hopes of finding the Mr. Right for me.
For those of
you who know how arranged marriages work - you must be familiar with
such a scene.
And for those
who don't– Do not give me that look. I
know. It might sound way too crazy when
I put it that way. But hey, this is how Indian marriages have been working since
forever. However, the times are changing now but for few souls like me with
lost hopes of finding the Mr. Right on their own, this comes as a rescue
mission!
As a 25 year
old girl, I had no idea what I wanted from my future life partner and I was not
sure of the criteria he should meet to be qualified as my Mr. Right. But I for
once was very clear on what would make him Mr. Wrong.
There were
times when my parents would be all beaming with joy being so proud of
themselves that they almost found the guy for their lovely little daughter. But the lovely little daughter had her own reasons to
prove them they were wrong. I found my reasoning really matured and genuine
although they thought it to be too lame.
“But, he is
living abroad!” (Who will be willing to relocate to a different place especially crossing oceans leaving behind family and friends! Foolish! )
“But, all his
friends on Facebook seems to be non Tamilians. (You see, my mother tongue is Tamil. What if he didn't know the language himself . Who will want to actually talk to the guy and get things clarified. Facebook is enough of a proof, right! )
And last but
not the least,
“But, he is
posing with a dog!”
I have this
strange fear for dogs. Not just dogs, but cats and rats and oh well, fear for
animals! It is not that I hate them. But I am scared of them for some unknown
reasons and the very sight of a dog makes me run for my life.
“We don’t
even know if it’s his dog! It is just a photograph”, argued my dad.
“But still, what if he gets one in future as he is so comfortable posing with
such a huge dog. No way can I live under the same roof with a dog!’
And so, how did the search finally go! Are you wondering if I am still a single desperately hoping my parents would
soon find the Mr. Right for me? You are wrong!
I did find
the guy I thought was right enough for me (only after checking with him if he is into dogs and making sure he is not planning to get one anytime in the future!) We got engaged after 7 months of courtship and married 4 months later.
Current Update - I am now happily married for little more than 3 years, living in UNITED STATES with my husband
and our little PUPPY my husband brought home for our second anniversary whom we
fondly call, BOOMER!
Yes. I did cross the oceans for someone I knew only
for a very brief amount of time and oh yes, you heard it right, I now live under the same roof with a dog!
But hey, at least
my husband speaks Tamil and have good number of Tamilian friends on Facebook! How
important that is to life!
And I told
you I don’t like people judging me. So enough of your judgmental eyes. I make
exception only once!
