There are two questions that any pregnant woman is expected to answer all the time -
"Do you know if it is a boy or a girl?"
" Have you decided on the name yet?"
Although, the first question is fairly simple enough to answer, the second question is almost every new parent's most dreaded question.
Figuring out a name that both the husband and wife equally likes is by itself an ordeal. But there is so much more to it!
How do we even decide on a name knowing that it is going to stick throughout the baby's lifetime? Will there be any regrets in the future?
Will she grow to be proud of her name?
Or, will she hate her name?
Will the name be socially approved?
Should it be a traditional name with cultural roots?
Or, should it be something trendy and modern?
And the list may go on and on...!
You may ask, "What's in a name?"
But it is obvious that there is so much more to it. There is a reason we don't have kids named Ravana or even Voldemort, right?
We might tend to look for name which has a meaning that we want to reflect or influence our baby's character. And that absolutely makes sense. As a parent, especially as a new parent, we might not want to settle with anything less than perfect.
But you know what, there can be times when you look at names and none of them seems to be perfect for the little one. When you sit back and think about it, maybe its not all about perfection.
One wise friend once told me,
"Pick a name that you like and that makes sense to you. When you start calling your little one by that name and especially when you put your little one's face to the name, it will all be just perfect. No matter what name you choose, it will become the sweetest name you have ever heard."
After all, regardless of whether we agree or not - that which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet!
